Something we can
all do to minimise the waste we send to the garbage dumps is to
compost our organic waste like newspapers, vegetable waste, egg
shells, garden waste, even coffee grinds! A great way to
do this, that is efficient, doesn't smell or take up much space, and
benefits your wallet and garden is worm farming or
Vermiculture.
Worms are the ideal labour force! They require minimal care,
are quiet, never go on strike and are cheap to maintain.
Worms will spend their entire lives converting your organic waste into humus, or
vermicompost - stopping only to reproduce.
Vermicompost is one of the
best and safest fertilizers around. It is ph neutral, feels and
smells like good soil. Vermicompost is five times richer
in nutrients and micro-elements than good topsoil. The vermiliquid
that is also produced is both a natural pest repellent
and organic fertilizer. Vermicompost and liquid are fertilizers
that are guaranteed to never burn your plants and are excellent growth
stimulants for cuttings. Vegetables can be grown free from dangerous insecticides and pesticides
- Providing innumerable health benefits to you and your family.
Having your own worm farm allows you and your
family to reduce the amount of waste going into landfills
and to reduce greenhouse gases whilst also enabling you to
supplement and enrich your garden soil at no extra cost. Because worms farms are
compact and there is no smell you can keep it indoors or on a
balcony of an apartment and use the vermicompost on your house
plants.. Further proving that we can all
contribute to the environment.
At The
Worm Shack we aim to show people of all spheres, in the
home, industry and in agriculture that reducing your carbon
footprint is not only beneficial to the environment, to your current and
future health, but it is also cost effective and cost
saving.
The Worm
Shack not only offers worm farms for the homemaker, but also vermicultural solutions to
the tourism industry (hotels can recycle and
save on costs for garden maintenance, whilst improving the
quality of their grounds and even grow their own vegetables), as
well as to farmers who wish to improve the yield per plant, and
therefore the income of their harvest, whilst reducing the expense
of insecticides and pesticides.
The Worm Shack
also offers a maintenance service, whereby once a month we will
bottle and pack your vermicompost and vermiliquid, ready for use, as well as check and maintain the condition of the worms and
the worm farm unit.
